Mary Pearson Goodhue

                Mary Pearson Goodhue, age 90, of Huntsville, died on Tuesday October 6, 2015.

 

                The daughter of a Baptist minister, Mary was born in Liberty, Missouri on December 8, 1924. She grew up in Montevallo, Alabama and attended Howard College in Birmingham. During WW II, she moved to Boulder, Colorado to be near her father, a chaplain in the army stationed in Denver. Mary attended the University of Colorado, where she met Walter Goodhue, the love of her life. They were married in Boulder in January of 1945 by her father. Mary graduated from the University of Colorado and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

 

                Mary and Walt provided a loving home for their daughters in Huntsville. They were active members of First Baptist Church, where Mary taught Sunday school. Mary also taught English as a second language to internationals living in Huntsville, tutored children, and was involved in many other mission programs.

 

                Mary loved to write. She wrote Sunday school lessons for the Southern Baptist’s Sunday School Board, as well as a series of Bible studies for children for Doubleday Publishers. Mary enjoyed reading, traveling, listening to operas, and spending time with her family as it grew over the years.

 

                Mary is preceded in death by her father, Dr. Fred B. Pearson; her mother, Ruth Casey Pearson; her brother, Fred B. Pearson, Jr.; and her husband of 62 years, Walter H. Goodhue.

 

                Mary is survived by her daughters, Jane Mayrer (Dr. Andy Mayrer), Nancy Goodhue, Beth Berthon (Maury Berthon), and Katharine Roberts; six grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.

 

                Funeral services will be Friday October 9, 2015 at 12 noon at First Baptist Church of Huntsville. The family will receive friends in the chapel of First Baptist Church on that day from 10:30 am until 12:00pm. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham.

 

                In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the First Baptist Church Mission Fund or Cooperation Baptist Fellowship.
