Welcome to the memorial page for

Zula (Mitchell) Walters

March 27, 1933 ~ October 8, 2017 (age 84) 84 Years Old

Zula Walters finally lost her struggle with Alzheimer’s and a recently broken hip. She was 84 years old. The youngest of eight brothers and one sister. Her parents were William Elisha and Nellie Mitchell of Owensboro, Kentucky.

After her children were gone from home, she decided to become a nurse and graduated from the UAH nursing school. She then felt a special call to help children with their struggles with diabetes. Camp Seale Harris is a special camp that teaches children how to manage their diabetes and gives them the encouragement to exercise the necessary discipline.  The camp had struggled for 30 years and could only attract 60 to 80 campers per year. Zula became the camp director and under her guidance grew to more than 400 campers every year. After she retired from Camp Seale Harris, she became a co-founder and executive director of the “Diabetes Camping Association”, which is dedicated to helping diabetes camps worldwide. Her work was often recognized and she received many awards. One was the Lions Clubs of Alabama Humanitarian of the Year award. Through Zula’s work, thousands will go to camp and live longer, healthier, and happier lives.

She is preceded in death by her grandson Luke Walters. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Joe Walters, her daughter Nancy Manahan and husband Leland of Smyrna, Tennessee, her son Dr. David Walters and wife Katherine of Erwin, Tennessee, five grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, October 12, 2017 at St. Stephens Episcopal Church at 2:00 pm. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the services from 1:00pm until 2:00pm. She will be buried in New Bethel Methodist Church Cemetery, Hartford, Kentucky on Saturday, October 14, 2017.

In lieu of flowers, the family request donation be made to Camp Seale Harris.
