Mr. Gene Falkenberry, age 90, formerly of Huntsville, AL passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2019, at his home in Hoover, AL.
After growing up in N.E. Huntsville and graduating from Rison High School, Mr. Falkenberry honorably served in the U. S. Army during the Korean War, stationed in Washington D.C. He retired from the Huntsville Times in 1995 after a career of 46 years. He was a lifelong member of Epworth United Methodist Church and served in many ways.
Mr. Falkenberry was passionate about his family, his church, and the friendships he developed over his lifetime. He enjoyed participating in sports during high school and then throughout his life, including the Men’s Church Softball leagues, umpiring at Optimist Park, and playing golf. There were few things he enjoyed more than a gathering of good friends or family that included good food.
The love of his life, his wife, Fannie Mae Johnson, preceded him in death in 2014 after 63 years of marriage. They provided a loving and stable home for their family and are survived by their four children: Sandra Leigh and Kelley Kilgore of Birmingham, Guy Falkenberry of Huntsville, and Scott Falkenberry of Nashville. His children have given him 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday, August 2, 2019 at 2 p.m. at Epworth United Methodist Church, with Rev. Todd Noren-Hentz officiating. The family will receive friends at the church on Friday from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. Burial will follow immediately at Huntsville Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Epworth UMC, 2102 Epworth Dr., NE; Huntsville, AL 35811 or to the Alzheimer's Association of Madison County.
