Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Robert L. Towner Sr. age 91, passed away on March 7, 2019, in Huntsville. Born on August 17, 1927, in Newport, Kentucky. He was the son of James G. and Mary (Steggemann) Towner. He attended St. James School in Ludlow, Kentucky from elementary through high school. On September 21, 1945, during his senior year of high school, he enlisted in the Army. After basic training at Camp Atterbury in Indiana, he went to Germany as part of the US Constabulary in the post-War efforts where he was based out of Darmstadt and later Wiesbaden. Upon his return from initial service, he then graduated from Saint James High School in 1947.  He later served during the Korean War, and retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1970. He was awarded a Bronze Star Medal, a National Defense Service Medal with 1st Oak Leaf Cluster, a Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, a United Nations Service Medal, an Armed Forces Reserve Medal with 10 Years Device, and an Arm Commendation Medal.
Following his retirement from the Army, he worked for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Athens, Georgia, until his retirement in 1986. He has been a longtime member of Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church in Madison.
Surviving him are his children, Carolyn Towner of Madison, Alabama, Deborah Towner of Madison, Alabama, Nancy Taylor of Brandon, Florida, and Robert (Ana) Towner Jr. of Madison, Alabama; three grandchildren, Robert Towner III, James (Mary) Towner, and Elizabeth Towner; and one great grandchild Rose Suttree Towner. Preceding him in death were his wife Claire (Herbert) and a daughter, Janet Towner.
Memorial visitation will take place on Tuesday March 12, 2019, from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church in Madison. A funeral mass will be held in the chapel of Saint John's at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday March 13, 2019, followed by a graveside service at Huntsville Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice Family Care, 10000 Serenity Lane, Huntsville, AL 35803.
