Obituary

Betty Hughes Hill, 82, of Lacey's Spring, Alabama, passed away on September 8, 2023 surrounded by her family.

Betty was born on June 8, 1941 in St. Matthews, SC. After graduating from North Charleston High School in 1959, she went on to study nursing in Charlotte, NC eventually moving back to North Charleston.

In 1962, she met James Burnett Hill, and they wed in January of 1964, going on to have 3 children, Gregory Burnett Hill, James Paul Hill, and John Aaron Hill.

When Betty had Greg, the phrase “stay-at-home-mom” didn’t exist. It was usual for women to stay home with the children while their husbands worked. But even by the standards of the era, Betty was an exceptional wife and mother. She cared deeply for her family and fully embraced her role as a homemaker and dedicated her life to serving family, friends, and neighbors not out of obligation, but because of who she was. She was always the first to offer help. Betty lived to serve others not seeking recognition in return.

Betty was an exceptional cook best known for her angel biscuits.  People from around the world were blessed by her love of cooking and warm hospitality. Many cherished memories were made around her dinner table.

Betty was a deeply religious woman who sought after the Lord with her whole being. Her search to know God led her to the outbacks of Alaska and the mission fields of Russia and Ukraine.

Betty also had a creative side.  She loved music, playing the piano, and singing.  In her "retirement" years she enjoyed painting, spending time with her grandchildren and sharing her talents with them. She also loved nature and spent many hours sitting on her back porch watching the birds and feeding her deer.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents, James Lanneau Hughes and Clara Estelle Sandifer, her brother James "Lanny" Hughes and her sister, Paula Hughes Hutson. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, James, her sons Greg (Tammy), Paul, John (Chanyn), and her grandchildren, Jennifer Borzooyeh, Christopher Hill (Tori), Aubrie Anna Hill, Aaron and Adam Hill, Michaela, Elissa and Makenna Hill and one great grandaughter, Libby Borzooyeh.  She is also survived by her sister Jenny Carver and brother Roger "Rocky" Hughes (Shelly) and many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Betty, never wanting to be the center of attention, requested her services be private for immediate family members and close friends only. Friends wishing to honor her are invited to make a donation in her name to their local children's hospitals, child care centers, and motherhood organizations.
