CSM Joseph L. Pitt, Army, Ret.

CSM/Ret Joe L. Pitt passed away on August 23, 2023 at the age of 94. He was preceded in death by his parents Joe L. Pitt and Mae Beatrice Aycock, wife Frances Pitt and sisters Sarah Wood, Beatrice (Dolly) Howell, Ruth Bennett, Geneva (Genny) McCay and brother William (Sonny) Pitt. He is survived by daughters Renate Pitt, Claudine Smith and son-in-law Floyd Smith.

   His military career began during World War Two in the European Theater of Operations.  He remained in Europe as a member of the Allied Occupation. He also fought during the Korean War, as well as two tours of duty in Vietnam. He served in the US Armed Forces until he retired in 1977 with an honorable discharge, multiple service awards, and multiple decorations for valorous actions in combat, including two Silver Stars, the Bronze Star with the V endorsement, and the Purple Heart with oak leaf.  

   On leaving the military he started a second career teaching ROTC at Lee High School, inspiring many students to seek a career in the armed forces, until his second retirement. 

Education was very important to him and he graduated with honors from Athens State College with dual Bachelor of Science degrees.

   He was a loving and devoted husband to his wife, Frances (Babe), and father to his children Claudine and Renate and he will be greatly missed.  

   Visitation will be Monday August 28th 1130-1230 at Spry Funeral Home in Huntsville with a graveside service at Maple Hill Cemetery.
