Carol Elledge Obituary

Carol Virginia Hughes Elledge, 92, of Huntsville, Alabama passed away Sunday, February 4, 2018 at her home surrounded by loved ones. Born December 26, 1925 in Niles, Michigan, Carol grew up in Cherokee, Iowa, the second child to the late Albert and Ethel Fricke Hughes. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George N. Elledge, a daughter, Marsha S. Erbert Johnson, and her brother, Donald A. Hughes.

Carol was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.  After marrying George, a U.S. Air Force pilot during World War II, in 1945, they lived in many U.S. states, England, and Germany as he was transferred by the military. Carol and George and their three children, Timothy, Marsha, and Janet moved to Huntsville in 1963 upon George’s retirement from the U.S. Air Force. They lived on Holmes Avenue, on what for many years was known as Christmas Card Lane because of the giant wooden Christmas cards each neighbor painted and installed in their front yards during the holiday season.

Carol and George were married for 65 years when he passed away in 2010. They were long-time and very active members of Trinity Presbyterian Church on Holmes Avenue. They were also prominent members of the Order of the Eastern Star (Helion Chapter #203) and the Masonic Lodge (Helion Lodge #1) in Huntsville. Carol held several appointed and elected positions in the Eastern Star on a local as well as state level.

Left to cherish her memory includes her children, Timothy G. Elledge (Margo) of Knoxville, TN and Janet A. Elledge-Nauman of Huntsville.  Her other survivors include beloved grandchildren, Daniel Erbert and Susan Yates, both of Huntsville, Diane Richard (Roald) of Scottsboro, Alabama, Michael Nauman (Katelyn) of Huntsville, Jessica Elledge of Washington, D.C., and Caitlin Elledge of Knoxville, Tennessee; nine great-grandchildren  Steven Yates, Christina Richard, Emily Yates, Erica Erbert, Mark Richard, Julie Erbert, Anna Richard, Ava Nauman, and Karson Nauman; a nephew, Donald Hughes of Sioux City, Iowa; several beloved great-nephews; and many dear friends.

The family wants to give our heartfelt thanks to Visiting Angels caregivers and Hospice Family Care for all their care and support during her last months of life.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Spry Funeral Home of Huntsville, Alabama. Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2018 from 1:00 – 2:00 pm with a service to follow at 2:00 pm.  Burial will follow at Valhalla Memory Gardens.
