Charlene Johnson Hardimon was born December 6, 1946, in Marianna, Arkansas, to Harrison Johnson, Sr and Lorine Small. She drifted into the peaceful slumber of eternal rest on October 10, 2025, surrounded by her devoted family. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Wanda Jean, and her nephew Brandon.
After graduating with the class of 1964 at Anna Strong High School in Marianna, Charlene moved to Chicago, Illinois, to begin her adult journey. She made Chicago her home for over five decades, where she pursued higher education at Kennedy-King College, built a meaningful career in education, social services, and in-home care. Charlene was known for her industrious spirit and approached every endeavor with determination, grace, and a deep sense of purpose.
Her intelligence and creativity were evident in every space she touched. With a natural talent for interior design and unmatched gardening skills, Charlene transformed each of her homes into a vibrant sanctuary of beauty and warmth. Her gardens were not just places of growth but were reflections of her soul.
Charlene’s faith was a cornerstone of her life. She was a dedicated member of Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church, where she served in the choir, supported Vacation Bible School, and fulfilled trustee duties. Later, she joined Mount Carmel Children of God Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. Walter J. Butts. Her bond with Reverend Butts and the church family was deep and enduring. Charlene lent her voice to the church’s album “This Is My Story”, a testament to her love of music and ministry. She was a faithful member, a cherished friend, and a quiet force of service.
In June of 1981, Charlene was united in holy matrimony with David Hardimon.
After retirement, Charlene made her home in Huntsville, Alabama closer to her children and grandsons.
Charlene leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and beauty. She will be deeply missed by her children: Eric (Shunda) of Atlanta/GA, Kevin of Chicago/IL, and Kim of Huntsville/AL; grandchildren: Aaron, Eric, Devone, Andrew, and great-grandson Oshea; siblings: Harrison Jr. of Chicago/IL, Ora of Chicago/IL, Eddie (Judy) of Pine Bluff/AR, Linda (Kenny) of St. Louis/MO, Carl (Michelle) of Burleson/TX, Zola of Marianna/AR, and Lois (Eddie) of Fayetteville/AR; nieces: Erica, Teshae, Ashley, Alex, Khadaja, Kyrell, and Kyra; nephews: Jeffrey, Raphael, and KhaBryn; an aunt: Ernestine Small and a host of extended family and dear friends.
