Charles Matthew Hill of Madison, Alabama departed this life on Sunday, September 29, 2024 at the age of 85. A native of Huntsville, Alabama, he was born on February 26, 1939, the oldest of six children.
He was a veteran of the United States Army for three years and spent most of his time in Alaska.
He proudly served his community as a member of the Huntsville Fire Department. He recalled driving the 1946 Seagraves and fighting fires from atop its 65-foot ladder.
Charles was a member of the Huntsville Historic Depot Volunteer Fire Brigade and was very proud of his work in restoring and exhibiting Huntsville’s first ladder truck in 2005. After his retirement in 1994, he spent many years restoring and maintaining fire trucks. His last ride will be to Walker Cemetery on one of the fire trucks he fixed specifically to transport firefighters to their final resting place.
He attended Butler High School where he met and married Delores, the love of his life on April 20, 1959, just a week before leaving for duty in Alaska.
Charles loved traveling with Delores, family and friends to many places. He and Delores visited Alaska several times but also travelled to the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone National Park, Hawaii, Washington, DC, Jamaica, Bahamas and the Caribbean.
Charles was a member of West Huntsville Baptist Church and enjoyed going places and spending time with the Prime Timers.
Charles was a hard working man and loved building and repairing, not only his and Delores’ home but built motors for cars and trucks.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Delores McAnally Hill; his son, Jeffrey Matthew Hill; his two sisters, Deborah (Richard) Nichols and Wanda (David) Nichols; his brother-in-law Dewy (Judy) McAnally and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Elsie Taylor Hill, his sister Annie Ruth Terrell, his brothers Jimmie Hill and Terry Hill, his parents-in-law, Dewey “Mack” and Eria Majors McAnally.
The family will receive friends on Monday, October 7, 2024 at West Huntsville Baptist Church of Huntsville, from 10 am until 11 am. A service will follow the visitation at 11 am.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly ask that donations be made to the West Huntsville Baptist Church Legacy fund in his memory.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank Charles’ caretakers at Floyd E. Tut Fann Veteran’s Home for the care and compassion they showed him during his brief stay there.
