Chief Petty Officer, USN, David Bullock Obituary

Chief Petty Officer, USN, David Aster Bullock, 78, passed away on July 21st, 2018, while in the care of Floyd E. “TUT” Fann Veterans Home in Huntsville, AL.

Our Father, David, was born on December 1st, 1939, in Monticello, Arkansas. He was the son of David and Maggie (Knight) Bullock. He spent 35 years serving our country in the United Sates Navy as a Flight/Weapons System Trainer Technician and Navy Recruiter. He was married to our Mom Brenda Bullock for 29 years. Dad was proud to serve his country and his family cherished the memories.

Dad earned his bachelor’s degree from Monticello Baptist Seminary, a master’s degree in Education from The University of Alabama, and a master’s degree in Social Work from New York University (NYU). He taught classes at several junior colleges in the evening and worked in the Technical Services Division for The University of Alabama. He was working as a licensed Social Worker for the State of Alabama when he suffered a debilitating stroke.

The quote from a recent book comes to mind when I think about my father… "Human beings are so capricious, so complex, so delightfully contradictory, that they deserve not only consideration and our unwavering determination to withhold our opinion until we have engaged with them in every possible setting at every possible hour.”  Amor Towels

It has been said of my father that he was stubborn, hotheaded, opinionated, solitary, self-sufficient and a non-conformist, not that the opinions of others mattered to my father, but one would have to spend every setting and every hour with my father to truly know his heart and mind. Dad was a deep thinker, writer of poetry and songs, an avid reader (he devoured books like he devoured a juicy steak), a lifelong learner, a volunteer, a loving, doting father (crazy about “his girls”), an armchair coach for his favorite football team (Roll Tide); he often jumped off the sofa to help catch a football or yell at the running back to run faster. Yes, Saturdays at our house were loud!  My father was multifaceted and complex. He could be serious and introspective one minute and free spirited and whistling a Willie Nelson tune the next. He was a good man and those who took the time to know him, really know him, loved all his qualities.  And most important of all, He rededicated his life to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. So, may we be joyful in knowing he is with the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, and with his loving family, patiently awaiting the rest of his family.

He is survived by his sister Betty Gooden; his daughters Kimberly Yarbrough and Angela Johnson; his granddaughters Hannah Yarbrough, Ella Katherine Yarbrough and Grace Johnson.  He was proceeded in death by his Brother James and sister Juanita (Bullock) Yelvington.

The Memorial Services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D.C. - date to be determined.
