Dale Blount Obituary

Dale Herrin Blount passed away peacefully at home on January 27, 2024, at the age of 87.  Born in Marion County, Indiana, on December 7, 1936, he grew up in Plainfield, Indiana.  He graduated early with a master’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1960 from Purdue University.  Over the course of his career, he worked at Pratt & Whitney, Teledyne Brown Engineering, and NASA.  At Pratt & Whitney and Teledyne Brown he was part of the design team for the Saturn V rocket engines.  He retired early from NASA after 20 years where he helped design the Space Shuttle Main Engines, becoming NASA's subject matter expert.  He often flew via NASA jet to various sites to diagnose and problem-solve issues with the engine.  Professional accomplishments also include two patents for Rotor Self-Lubricating Axial Stop and Cryogenic Anti-Friction Bearing with Reinforced Inner Race.  He was a Professional Engineer and retired from NASA in 1998.  After retirement he worked occasionally as a consultant.  He enjoyed hobbies such as competitive sailing, woodcarving, and airbrushing.

Dale was preceded in death by his sisters Bette Blount and Virginia Keller. 

Dale is survived by his sister Reta Nichols, and daughters Kim Adkisson (Steve) and Laura Cashon (John).  He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kelly Cashon Dressler (James), Ross Cashon, and Trey Cashon.
