Edward R. Blount Jr. died February 28, 2025, in Huntsville, Alabama. He was born August 29, 1940, in Orangeburg, SC, the youngest of three to Edward R. Blount Sr. and Annie Felder.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Virginia Carr Johnson and Annie Felder Blount, and his wife of 43 years Phyllis Joy Armstrong Blount.
Ed is survived by his three children Debbie A. Hare, and husband Ben Hare of Orangeburg, SC, Pastor E. Richard Blount III and wife Karen Blount of Weaverville, NC, and Ryan G. Blount and wife Amber Blount of Madison, AL, and seven grandchildren, Bryan Hare of Charleston, SC, Abbie and Jacob Blount of Madison, AL, and Evan, Audrey, Brock, and Gabrielle Blount of Weaverville, NC.
Ed was a graduate of North Greenville Jr. College in Greenville, SC, Carson Newman College in Jefferson City, TN, and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY. After serving as a pastor, he made the transition to social work. He began by working as a probation officer for the Department of Corrections in Nashville, TN. Ed went on to start two non-profits before opening a halfway house. In 1981, Mr. Blount went to work at the Robert Neeves Center for Children in Madison County, AL, where he worked for 20 years. Before he retired, Ed taught Criminology 101 and
Introduction to Criminal Justice at Calhoun Community College in Athens, AL. In his retirement, Ed worked as a security guard for the Ledges Community Huntsville, AL.
In addition to being a devoted husband and father, Ed spent much of his free time working with Boy Scout Troop 237 joining his work with the Robert Neeves Center with his son’s Scout Troop. Several boys gained self-confidence, leadership skills and discovered a path into a brighter future through his leadership as an assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 237.
Services will take place at Spry Funeral Home located at 2411 Memorial Pkwy NW, Huntsville, AL 35810, on Saturday March 8, 2025. The visitation will be held from 10:00am-11:00am, followed by the service at 11:00am, officiated by Pastor E. Richard Blount III.
