George Williams Obituary

George Allen Williams, 86, of Lawrenceburg TN died peacefully in his sleep after a short illness on April 4, 2025. George was born in Revilo, Tennessee on September 3rd, 1938, to Lonnie Lee Box Williams and William Grover Williams. He was a man of faith, integrity and intense curiosity. As a young man, he served in the United States Air Force. He remembered being stationed in Antarctica and seeing the steam rise from Mount Erebus. He flew over Spain and France to deliver blankets to Berlin, over the South Seas islands and the frozen tundra of Labrador. He returned with vivid stories that captured the imagination of his children forever. He returned to Five Points, TN where he married Frances June Varnell Williams, and they lived most of their lives together there. They attended Anderson Primitive Baptist church, where George remained as the last official member. Most knew him as a gentle peach orchardist, or a grower of tomatoes and pumpkins, or inventor and storyteller.

He was a complex man, a lover of spontaneous road trips and intractable questions about God and life. He is now with those who went before him: his wife, his parents, and his brothers Alton, Paul and Carthol. He leaves behind a sister, Dorris, and a brother, Morris. All of whom he was rather fond of. He also leaves his heart for adventure and courage to question everything with his daughter Julie Oneida Pierce of Harvest, Alabama and son John Lawson Williams of Olympia, Washington. They also inflict road trips on his grandchildren Hannah, Eleanor, and Nathan Pierce as well as Orion and Oliver Williams. Dad did life his own way: thinking, challenging and praying until the very end. During every road trip, there was sadness when he had to turn home, because he wanted to see what was around the next bend in the road. He continues on now and will be exploring the next valley and enjoying the answers to all of his questions.

There will be a memorial service at First Pentecostal United Church at 1103 Springer Rd, Lawrenceburg, TN 38464 on April 26th. Visitation will be from 2pm-3:30pm with a memorial from 3:30-4:00. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you pause for a moment to plant something, or pick up a new book, or dream of your next adventure. If you feel you must contribute something, please make a donation to your local public library. Those are all the things he loved, and it would make him happy to know that you did.
