Gregg Berens Obituary

Gregg William Berens, 65, of Gurley, Alabama, peacefully passed away on February 28, 2024, surrounded by family and friends. The family and extended community mourn the loss of a revered husband, father, and friend.

Born January 18, 1959, to Larry and Reva Berens in McCook, Nebraska, Gregg was molded into a self-sufficient, successful man who set about forging his place.

Known affectionately by his family as “The Funny One” and by his friends as “Holmes,” Gregg was the living embodiment of a “people person.” He lit up rooms, making lifelong friends during every significant life stage. Gregg was a magnet, whether it was during college, where he became an All-American on the football field, or during his 40-plus year career in the food industry.

The best use of this influence was when Gregg met his wife, Bernadette, the glue of the Berens gang, in 1992. Shortly after crossing paths, they formed a bond that survives even today.

Gregg was the father of three wonderful children, Andrea, Tyler, and Krystina. He was a devoted father, providing his children with the conditions and affections that every parent dreams of whenever they realize they’re bringing new life into the world.

The support and love that Gregg consistently showed his family and friends were always front and center. No bridge was too far for him to cross for a loved one.

The dedication and generosity emanating from Gregg were not limited to family and friends. He was an avid community supporter, helping raise money annually for his favorite cause, The Care Center. He set a fundraising record year after year, only to top it in the succeeding period.

Gregg’s loss will echo for a time. In the end, that is what he deserves. To reverberate through the lives of those that he touched without end. If there was a mold whenever he was born, it was thrown away shortly after. He was genuinely one-of-one. Both loving and loved by all, his legacy will be sustained by all who existed in his orbit.

Gregg was preceded in death by his father, Larry Berens, his mother, Reva (nee. Wheeler), & sister, Diane Schick.

He is survived by Bernadette Berens, Andrea Berens Jones (Landon), Tyler Berens, and Krystina Berens.
