Helen Jean (Currey) Zaun, age 96, died at Madison Hospital, Alabama, on March 23, 2025.
Helen was born on August 17, 1928, in Grafton, West Virginia to William and Velma Currey. She served in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) 1953-1955, stationed at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where she met her future husband, Gary Zaun. During his military career they were stationed in multiple locations within and outside of the U.S. After Gary retired, they settled in Harvest, Alabama. Helen retired from George C. Marshall Space Flight Center (NASA) in Huntsville, Alabama.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Gary Zaun, buried in Huntsville Memory Gardens in Alabama, and son David Zaun.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Sandra Zaun, of Fayetteville, Arkansas; sister, Brenda Zaun (spouse Michael Hawkes), of St. David, Arizona; and grandson, Ryan Nichols of Fayetteville, Arkansas.
The family would like to thank the staff at The Madison Village senior living community for their years of compassionate care for Helen in both independent and assisted living. Additionally, we thank the medical staff at Madison Hospital for their urgent care, respect and compassion during her final hours.
As per Helen’s wishes, no services are scheduled. Helen will be buried beside Gary at Huntsville Memory Gardens. Friends and family are invited to leave condolences and remembrances online.
