Jim asked Jesus into his heart as a young man. He had a special experience with God as a young teen, riding in a brush area with a match in his mouth, he dropped the match and all the sudden he was surrounded by fire. He prayed, “God if you will get me out of this, I will live for You. And God cleared a path for him.
Jim finished his BS at UT and his 2 years in the Army when he met Frances. After their first date he told a friend, “That is who I am going to marry.” A few months later when Frances finished nursing school, they did get married on January 15th, 1958. Jim was attending First Christian Church and that is where they got married. Jim was working at Oak Ridge at that time. He had a convertible and a boat. He was a member of a group called the Flying Boatman and put on boat shows with them.
David was born in Sept and when he came home from the hospital Jim said my sons will know I love them – and they always did. When David was about 14 months old, and Danny was soon to come, Jim and Frances did not always go to church. One Sunday, Frances pregnant with Danny and carrying a toddler David went alone to church. When she returned home, Jim told her, “You will never have to do that again.” Then with the leading of the Holy Spirit, they began seeking God and a church and ended up at Lonsdale Baptist. While there, they both rededicated their lives to the Lord.
When their youngest Darryl (#3) was about a year old, they moved to Huntsville, Al and joined Jackson Way Baptist Church. Bro Dorriety was the pastor. A highlight of Jim’s life was being ordained as a deacon when Bro Lindsey was Pastor. Jim was gifted with the ministry of helps and encouragement. He served in many capacities from painting in the Sunday School area, a tithing testimony, and loved singing in the choir. Later served with Lynn Knight in the Pantry ministry. Jim loved people and was not one to ever say anything bad about anyone.
Throughout his life, Jim loved to play bridge, golf, and to travel. When his boys were young he enjoyed going camping with them.
Professionally Jim worked for Boeing, switching to Rockwell when Boeing relocated and later moving back to Boeing. He retired in the early nineties.
Never claiming to be perfect, he was always a man of his word – yes and he kept his promise to God made as a young teen. God saved him from the fire and Jim lived for him, always.
James is preceded in death by his youngest son Darryl (Terry). He is survived by his loving wife Frances; sons, David and Danny (Pam); grandchildren, Jake (Elizabeth), Bennett (Mandie), Dorothy (Chad), Amanda (Dillon), Eli, and Alex, as well as 14 great grandchildren.
