Johnnie Swaim Obituary

Mrs. Johnnie Marie McMurtrie Swaim age 94 of Huntsville passed away on February 1, 2025.

Johnnie was born on September 25th, 1930 and preceded in death by her parents John Crouthers and Minnie Mae Rodman McMurtrie.

Johnnie was preceded in death by her husband William "Bill" D. Swaim, Jr. and they were married 61 years.

Johnnie was preceded in death by four sisters (Evelyn Parvin, Bertie Mae Hovis, Lorene Greenhaw and Jean Thomas) and one brother (William McMurtrie) all of the Huntsville area.

Johnnie is survived by two daughters, Jeri Swaim Kirkpatrick (Tim), Joni Swaim, nephew Jimmie D. Parvin (Billy Collins), sister-in-law Barbara Swaim, and many additional nieces and nephews.

Johnnie graduated from Madison High School and began her work career, first at Rose Jewelry on the square in downtown Huntsville and then at Redstone Arsenal. She enjoyed working and was a government civilian employee for over 37 years.  After retiring from the government she went on to continue her career working as a contractor until 2005.

Johnnie had many hobbies, she liked music and played the piano, enjoyed exercising, water skiing, bowling, sewing and traveling with work and family, especially the trips she made to New York City starting with her first high school class trip then with family.  She was an amazing mother and she and Bill built a loving happy home with lots of fun for their two children, that left many wonderful memories for her girls, their cousins and friends. She was selfless, loving and giving and enjoyed more than anything doing and giving to others, and as a result, to know Johnnie was to love her.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday February 5, 2025. The family will have visitation one hour prior and the funeral will be at noon at Spry Funeral Home, North Memorial Parkway with Mr. Mack Thomas (nephew) officiating. Internment will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery.
