Juanita Cowart Service, aged 85, passed away on Friday, October 4, 2024, surrounded by her family and was united with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She lived in Huntsville, Alabama but spent the last five months in Knoxville, Tennessee with her husband and family. Juanita was known for her loving and caring personality, dedicating her life to supporting her family, church, and community.
Educated at Columbia Bible College in South Carolina with a degree in Education, she taught at Presbyterian Day School and served in the administrative office when it became Westminster Christian Academy. For over 50 years, Juanita was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where she conducted Bible studies, sang in the choir, and shared God's love in local nursing homes. Her most enduring legacy may be her unwavering commitment to praying daily for her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Jim Service, her parents James and Violet Cowart, her brothers Darwin (Doc) Holland and James Cowart, and her sister Judy Foster.
Juanita leaves behind a cherished family. She is survived by her three daughters: Debbie Zimmerman (husband David) of Knoxville, Tennessee; Jennifer O’Rorke of Tampa, Florida; and Kimberly Pell (husband Scott) of Huntsville, Alabama. Juanita also leaves seven grandchildren: Kristen Bryant (husband John), David Zimmerman (wife Marissa), Allison Zimmerman, Kyle O’Rorke, Alissa O’Rorke, Anna Hooks (husband Caleb), and Taylor Pell. Additionally, she was a great-grandmother to Jackson and Riley Hooks, Quincy and Kennedy Zimmerman, and Rhett Bryant. Her sisters Terry McCay of Virginia and Mona Dirlam of Florida also survive her.
The family will honor Juanita’s life with a private graveside service at Huntsville Memory Garden with a gathering of family and friends on Saturday, October 12 from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm at Westminster Presbyterian Church (5744 Oakwood Road NW, Huntsville, AL 35806).
