Mark Alexander McGarr, 47, passed away peacefully and unexpectedly on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, in his Huntsville, Alabama home. Alex was born on November 27, 1977, in Beaumont, Texas, to Mark Crawford McGarr and Irmtraut Dehne McGarr. Alex was a devoted son, grandson, brother, husband, father, nephew, and friend.
Alex was beloved by a large universe of friends around the world, whom he touched with his sincerity, compassion, and benevolent nature. He never met a stranger.
He grew up in his childhood home in Alief, Texas, where he developed lifelong relationships with friends, who became his brothers and sisters. Some of his greatest joys growing up were flying remote control airplanes with his grandfather, Hans-Dietrich Dehne, an aerospace engineer, working on his 1966 Mustang, cheering on his favorite baseball team, the Houston Astros, and sailing with his parents most weekends.
Alex followed in his father’s footsteps earning the distinction of Eagle Scout in the 1990’s. In 1994, Alex attended his father’s alma mater, New Mexico Military Institute (940’s in the hooches). During his time at NMMI, he was an accomplished student and recognized football player, leading the NMMI Colts to a winning and memorable senior year, graduating in 1997. Upon graduation, Alex attended Texas Christian University and received a B.S. in Business Administration from the M.J. Neeley School of Business in 2001. During his time at TCU, he was a member of Delta Tau Delta, a brotherhood of friends that will forever be touched by Alex’s humor, acceptance, and generosity. Alex was known by many and loved by all.
After college, Alex moved to Marina del Rey, California, with his cherished Catalina sailboat, “Jedi,” and began a career trading commodities, where he stayed until 2009, before moving back to Texas to reside in Austin. Alex was an avid reader, sports fan, and investor who ran a successful retail micro-market point-of-sale business. In 2021, Alex and long-time partner, Honey Graham Skivolocke, moved to Huntsville, Alabama, and were married in July 2022. Alex and Honey loved to spend time in the boat with their family on the lake.
Fascinated with his grandfather’s legacy, 1st Lt. Royce C. McGarr, a decorated WWII fighter pilot who died in a training exercise during the Korean War, Alex successfully earned his pilot license in 2021. In 2024, Alex received his scuba certification and was excited to travel to far off lands and waters. Alex was the definition of a true renaissance man, who set his sights on so many life goals and accomplished them all.
Alex is survived by his wife, Honey; stepson, Brixton; and his dog Blu; his Uncle Wolf Dieter R. Dehne; his Aunt Heidrun H. Varadachary; his cousins Arun, Arang and Dietram Varadhachary; as well as his Uncle Seevaram Nattu Varadhchary, who Alex expressed great gratitude towards for introducing other spiritual aspects of life.
He is preceded in death by his parents; half-brother, Royce Lincoln McGarr; grandparents Sarah and John Shepperson; and his childhood best friend, Louis Planes.
He will be missed by his brothers and sisters in Christ, as he is welcomed into the Lord’s arms joining his family and friends who are awaiting him.
Alex wished to have his ashes spread in Port Aransas, Texas, a special place to wish Captain McGarr a good journey in fair winds and following seas.
