Ralph Broad Obituary

Ralph Lynn Broad, 74, took his final bow on September 9th, 2025. With his girls by his side, he peacefully closed the curtain on a life dedicated to bringing joy to others. Known as Lynn to all who loved him, he was born on July 2, 1951, in Biloxi, Mississippi. He was a loving husband, devoted father, son, brother, and cherished friend. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jean and Harry Broad.

Lynn's life was full of curiosity and a passion for learning. As a military child, he lived in California and Germany before settling in Huntsville, Alabama, the homeplace of the Broad
family. A lifelong music lover, he was a proud member of the Lee High School marching band's tuba line and served as president of the choir. He cherished his high school memories and stayed close with his classmates, attending reunions whenever he could.

After graduating in 1969, Lynn kept his curiosity alive. He worked as a shoe salesman, sold newspaper subscriptions and Volkswagens, and ran a radio station. In the 1980s, his curiosity led him to a hot new trend: computer networks. He taught himself to wire networks for small businesses, corporations, and nonprofits, and was particularly proud of his work setting up the first home for the National Children’s Advocacy Center in Huntsville.

His professional life was matched by his tireless volunteerism. As an active member of Jackson Way Baptist Church, Lynn helped plant Winchester Road Baptist and coordinated World Changers missions to Huntsville. The whole family loved traveling on mission trips, especially to Jefferson City, Tennessee, for Appalachian Outreach. He volunteered as a marching band instructor for Covenant Christian Academy and served as the head cook for Dinner Theatre at Jackson Way.

In 1980, Lynn was recruited by the Exchange Club of Huntsville to join the production team for the annual Fourth of July celebration, sparking a passion that would define the rest of his life. As his daughters grew, he followed their interests, giving his time and talent to community theater. For decades, he volunteered on countless shows as a technical director, scenic designer, lighting and sound designer, and flymaster. Alongside his wife, Gay, a talented seamstress, he was a celebrated member of the local theater community, winning Wings Awards for his artistry and receiving the honor of having the Lyrique Music Productions award for technical theater named after him.

Lynn's volunteer work eventually led to a new career. He joined the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees Local 900, using his community theater skills to support traveling musicals, plays, and concerts. His pyrotechnic experience with the Exchange Club grew into a successful career in fireworks. Over 22 years as a lead shooter for Pyro Shows of Alabama, Lynn designed and fired shows for the City of Huntsville, Arts Huntsville, Redstone Arsenal MWR, and many other municipalities and organizations. His work took him to venues across the nation, from Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa to Madison Square Garden in New York City, where he fired pyro for Wrestlemania and marked a venue off his bucket list.

He supported famous entertainers like Metallica, Beyoncé, and Snoop Dogg, as well as WWE performers. Though he enjoyed meeting these celebrities, Lynn was most fulfilled by training the next generation of pyrotechnicians, sharing his expertise with fire marshals and technicians across the region.

From 2008 to 2021, Lynn balanced two careers that embodied his love for live performance. While leading his work in pyrotechnics, he also served as the Production Manager for the Von Braun Center. This was a job that perfectly suited his lifetime of experience, from community theater to professional touring. He found immense satisfaction in working with the venue's staff and crews to bring every show to life, whether it was a national touring musical or a local production. His calm professionalism and deep technical knowledge were a source of stability for every show that passed through the VBC's doors, leaving a lasting impact on the quality of productions that grace its stage.

Lynn was a generous teacher. He loved sharing his knowledge and skills with the next generation, mentoring countless young people in the art of theater production. He will be missed deeply, but his legacy lives on.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Gay, and their household full of girls: Jeanette (Jimmy) Hopkins; Janeen (Michael) May, Jennifer (Bob) Brownlee, Joanna (Jeff) White, Lyndsay (David) Abel, and Katie Broad (James Bennett). He was a proud Grandaddy Lynn to his 11 grandchildren and Uncle Lynn to his 9 nieces and 8 nephews. Other survivors include his brother, Harry (Debra) Sturm and his two sisters, Kathy Broad and Karen (Tom) Pierce.
