Master Sergeant Richard Martin "Rick" Lee, USMC (Ret.), passed away on December 8, 2024, in Huntsville, Alabama, at the age of 67. Born on November 1, 1957, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Rick lived a life of unwavering devotion—to his country, his family, and the pursuit of excellence.
In 1981, Rick began a distinguished career with the United States Marine Corps. Starting with G Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines at Camp Geiger, he served until 1985 before embarking on the challenging and elite path of Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD). Through skill and determination, Rick earned the prestigious Master Blaster rating—an emblem of mastery in his field. Over two decades of dedicated service to his nation culminated in his retirement from active duty in 2001.
Even after retirement, Rick’s commitment to the EOD community endured as he imparted his extensive knowledge to future technicians in Huntsville and later at Eglin Air Force Base. To his students and colleagues alike, “Mr. Lee” was a revered mentor and a wellspring of expertise.
While stationed at Camp Lejeune, Rick met Penelope Haselgard Lee, LCpl USMC, from Gloucester, Massachusetts. Their shared service and mutual respect blossomed into a marriage that spanned nearly forty years. Together they raised three sons: Erick Walker Lee (Brittany Rose Barragan Lee) of Franklin, Tennessee; Sean Quinn Lee of Huntsville, Alabama; and Bryan Keith Lee of Harvest, Alabama. Rick cherished his role as grandfather to Jaxon Robert Lee and Abigail Rosegard Lee.
Rick will be laid to rest with military honors during a private family service at his homestead in Huntsville. His strength of character and legacy of dedication will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his memory bring solace to those who mourn his loss.
