Scott (Spankkie) Mintzer, age 55, of Owens Cross Roads, AL, passed away peacefully at his home on August 23, 2025. He was born on January 17, 1970, to Russ and Janice Mintzer in Freeport, NY, on Long Island, and reared in Merrick, NY, on Long Island.
He graduated from Nassau Community College in New York and continued his education at Stony Brook University in New York.
Scott is survived by his loving wife, Miscal Arnold Mintzer; children, Justin and Makenzie Mintzer of Hartselle, AL; and stepdaughter, Hannah Jones of Los Angeles. He is also survived by both parents of Merrick, NY; his brother, Ryan (Melissa) Mintzer; several nieces and nephews, including Brooke Mintzer and Damon Mintzer, also of Merrick, NY; Uncle Howard and Aunt Barbara Good of Massachusetts; and Uncle Stewart (Stew) Siegel of Arkansas.
Scott was a hard-charging, gifted chef who valued his family, friends, and community connections above all else. He loved nothing more than spending time with Miscal and his kids and would have given his life for them.
An active, sober member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 30 years, he gave his time unselfishly to help countless men achieve sobriety. As a member of the clean and sober motorcycle club, Alternative MC, he traveled around the country 12-stepping men who could relate to the rough-and-ready brotherhood. He followed the Grateful Dead for many years and was proud to have been counted among the Wharf Rats, a clean and sober faction of the Deadheads. He lived the principle, “We are not a glum lot,” and showed newcomers that it’s possible to have fun in sobriety. He often said, “I may be the only Big Book a person ever sees.”
The family is grateful for the outpouring of love and support from many friends during Scott’s illness. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
