Susie Jane Hargrove

Susie Jane Owens Hargrove, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully in her home on February 12, 2025, at the age of 84.

Born on September 24, 1941, in Grundy, Virginia, Susie lived a life pursuing God’s love, wisdom, and compassion. She shared 47 years with the love of her life, Edward Hargrove, making a home that was always warm and welcoming, often filled with laughter and the smells of home-cooked meals.

Susie dedicated over 20 years to caring for babies and young children at Locust Grove Daycare, where her nurturing spirit left a lasting impact on many families. She was a skilled homemaker, known for her exceptional cooking and quilting.

A passionate reader, Susie especially loved fiction novels and built an extensive library in her home, reflecting her lifelong love of stories and learning. She had an independent nature and taught her children and grandchildren the power and importance of their voices and actions, to speak up when there are wrongs, to voice their truths, to share their stories, and to follow their words with actions. Her strong conviction for women's rights and social equality is carried on through her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Her wisdom and strength were a guiding light to those who knew her. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Susie was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Louisa Owens; her daughter, Nora Edwards; her sister, Barbara Stiltner; and her two brothers, Earl Owens Jr. and Kenneth Owens.

She is survived by her devoted husband, Edward Hargrove; her son, Jody Stiles; her four grandchildren, Emma Wallace, Natalie Stiles, Jenny Dusseau, and Jackson Stiles; her five great-grandchildren: Louisa, Shiloh, and Maximus Wallace, and Parker and Jett Dusseau; three sisters, Sherry Shortt, Helen Nash and Patricia Elswick; and four brothers, Dorsey, David, Olen,  and Gary Owens.
