William Lang Obituary

Master Gunnery Sergeant William “Bill” Michael Lang, 79, passed away on Monday, January 5, 2026, at his home in Gurley, Alabama, knowing he was loved. Bill was born on October 6, 1946, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Delbert and Lorraine Lang.

Bill proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps for nearly 24 years, including service during the Vietnam War. His time in uniform was a source of deep pride, and he carried the title of Marine with honor long after his retirement. Over the course of his distinguished career, he earned numerous accolades, including the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, Vietnam Service Medal with 5 Devices, Presidential Unit Citation, Good Conduct Medal with 6 Stars, Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, Meritorious Mast, Navy Unit Citation, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious, Unit Citation, and Meritorious Unit Citation. Following his military career, Bill continued his commitment to service with over 10 years of employment at the USDA.

He will be remembered as a resolute man who loved his country, adored his family, couldn’t resist a good-looking car, and appreciated a well-earned bourbon. Bill is survived by his children, Bill (Karen) Lang, Rob (Terri) Lang, Teresa (Jeff Martin) Lang, and former son-in-law Travis Hartline; his siblings, Robert (Margie) Lang, Denise (Dale) Ziolkowski, Sherri Musa, Karen (Dan) Bates, and Randy (Maureen) Schweitzer; his grandchildren, Erica (Ryan Farber) Frazier, Shyann (Jacob Olinger) Hartline, Jacob Lang, Mackenzie Lang, and Alexis Hartline; and his great-grandchildren, Alexis Farber and Jayce Farber, who brought him immense pride and joy.

A funeral service with full military honors will be held at the Chattanooga National Cemetery on Friday, January 16 at 1:00 p.m. (EST), a fitting tribute to a man who gave so much in service to his country. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions in Bill’s memory be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Toys for Tots, Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, or Semper Fi & America's Fund. Memorials may be sent to 672 Gass Rd, Trenton, GA 30752.
