William Spurlin Obituary

William David (Dave), 68 of Huntsville passed away June 5, 2020 at Huntsville Hospital.

Dave was born December 14, 1951 in Jacksonville, Florida to parents, Charles William Spurlin and L. Estella Spurlin.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Vickie; Sister Ruth Ward of Plano, Texas: Nephews Charles Rutkowski and Joseph Rutkowski of Huntsville, Alabama.

Preceded in death by;  Parents, Charles W and Estella Spurlin, Brother Charles L. Spurlin and Sister Mary M. Lonas.

Dave graduated from Butler High School, Huntsville, AL in 1971.  Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Airforce. He left the USAF after ten years of service and began a career in the HVAC field. Dave worked for Huntsville Hospital in Plant Operations for several years. During this time, he developed an interest in computer technology.  He set out to learn all that he could and soon had developed an understanding that enabled him to pursue certifications in Database Management and Computer Programming. Starting in the late 1990’s he used this self-acquired knowledge to pursue a career in the IT field at Mevatec Corporation and BAE Systems until his retirement in 2018.

Dave had a passion other than computers that consumed several years of his life.  With the help of his wife and several wonderful volunteers, he stared a Parrot Rescue and Sanctuary in 2004.  PARS operational years spanned 2004-2018 during which time, approximately two hundred parrots were rescued and re-homed. As executive director, Dave spent his nights and weekends helping people with their parrot problems, worked with local businesses to educate the public about parrot ownership and supported animal control officials when birds were surrendered to them. Dave was affectionately known as "macawman" and had a knack for working with large parrots of all backgrounds. He touched countless feathered and un-feathered hearts with his involvement in the rescue community.
