Ernest "Ernie" Meinecke, 92, originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, died on October 18, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents, Moliy Salava and Ernest Frederick Meinecke, his daughter, Victoria Lynn Meinecke, and brother Gerald Meinecke. Ernie is survived by his wife of 68 years, Arleen Meinecke; son and daughter-in-law, Ernie Meinecke and Deborah Baker; four grandsons, Joshua McGee, Jesse Stout, Lee Meinecke, and Matthew Meinecke; siblings, Jean Green, Charlie Meinecke (Rene), and Jim Meinecke (Maggie); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ernie served in World War II in the Pacific Theater and was part of the occupation forces in Japan. Following his military service, he attended the Milwaukee School of Engineering, obtaining a degree in electrical engineering. Soon after, he began a 35-year career with IBM where he rose to senior management. During his career with IBM, he worked in numerous locations with varied projects such as the development of barcoding, the BART transit system, Skylab, and Global Positioning. After retiring in 1985, he and Arleen returned to Huntsville. Ernie became an avid golfer at Valley Hill Country Club. He boasted that he continued to walk his 18 holes until his 88th birthday, had four hole-in-one trophies, and continued to play several times a week until he was 90. In addition to being a skilled golfer, he was a glider pilot, Green Bay Packers fan, and enjoyed snow skiing with his family. Ernie was devoted to Arleen and was a supportive and loving grandfather.
A memorial service will be held on October 26 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Marks Lutheran Church, 200 Longwood Dr., Huntsville, Al. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. The family requests that any memorial donation be made to Hospice Family Care, 3304 Westmill Dr. SW # A, Huntsville, AL 35805.
